Let’s take a look at how this will affect your B2B marketing strategies.

PR AND MARKETING NEED TO WORK TOGETHER

As businesses, we need to know how to properly communicate with our customers based on our individual strategies. We must recognize that our PR and marketing efforts need to adapt and work together during this time.

Stay Relevant to your Audience: Look for ways to address the needs and concerns of your audience, including how you can support the workforce which is now suddenly almost exclusively remote. For example, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Slack have tripled their ad spend promoting their remote communications tools*.

Cease Nonessential Press Releases and Launches: Press releases and launches are a key part of any B2B strategy. But now is not the time for your latest announcement. People are focused on the current situation, not your company news. So put off that launch for now.

Examples: There have been several examples of companies changing their manufacturing plants, distribution, etc. to help during this time. Last week Dropbox issued a press release that they’ve joined with 25 Silicon Valley tech firms to donate $22M to various organizations helping during the crisis. SAP Ariba published an article on how they helped a customer find 500 hospital beds in just 30 minutes for a temporary media facility. The billboard pictured here was updated by Poly to show their support for their customer and the community, maintaining their brand presence while being relevant to the current situation.

Focus Online

With in-person events off-limits, look for ways to do things online to support your B2B marketing strategies. Create virtual events and webinars that people can log into from the comfort of their home. Do a live video on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to engage your audience. Take time to produce videos that will benefit your strategy even after COVID-19 dissipates.

Build up your Social Media: Social media is a mainstay for everybody staying at home during this time. And it’s something that you can work on and improve in the background. Make sure all of your information is up to date. Look for ways to spice up your social profiles and feeds. Upload pertinent content that keeps you and your brand top of mind, but also speaks to the needs of your audience.

Optimize your Digital Spaces: Clean up and refine your blogs and websites, as well as SEO, to ensure your current content is as visible as possible. Update old information. Analyze your strategy and adjust your tactics and budget accordingly.

EMAIL VS. TELEMARKETING

The odds stacked against telemarketing have escalated in 2020 with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, declared a state of emergency, unsolicited telemarketing calls during the period were also prohibited, stating that telemarketing during emergencies could hinder the state’s resident’s ability to access safety information. Even in states where telemarketing is not banned, it is difficult to reach your target audience when many are working from home.

Roadblocks for telemarketing open the door for email marketing as B2B marketers begin to review their ad spending. Email already has many advantages, including:

Targeted and personalized emails have a 74% high chance of customer engagement

Customers respond more positively to personalized emails than telemarketing

With email, there is the potential for follow up when the initial response bears no fruit

Personalize your emails, content, and website to enhance customer loyalty, experience, and engagement.

With COVID-19, marketing teams have more challenges than ever before in maintaining their sales pipelines, mitigating business impact, and continuing growth during this health and logistical crisis. The good news is ad spending is actually up in some industries, including tech.

Here are some tips to help the B2B tech market continue to grow, and so other industries can bounce back as quickly as possible.

LESSEN THE IMPACT ON PIPELINE

Start with LinkedIn: 95% of B2B marketers are already using LinkedIn to grow their businesses. Find your dream customers and connect with them on LinkedIn.

Convert your existing communications into video: Video will drive engagement on social media while also offering an alternative to in-person communications.

Start a podcast: Podcasts are the fastest growing content in B2B. 74% of people say they listen to podcasts to learn new things. Create podcasts to teach your prospects more about your products and services while connecting remotely.

Bring back the Webinar: 73% of B2B marketers now say webinars are the best way to generate high-quality leads.

Implement ChatBots: We’re moving toward a place where 85% of customer interactions take place without a human conversation. Chatbots use artificial intelligence and make sure your sales and marketing operation is staffed 24/7.

IMPACT OF REMOTE WORKERS ON ABM CAMPAIGNS

B2B marketers have become much more efficient by executing targeted account based marketing programs. These programs rely on being able to reach potential customers at targeted companies using data partners to drive promotions. In many cases, data partners can also gauge intent and identify surging accounts and prospective customers. So if those targeted people are now working remote, can they still be reached? The short answer is “yes”. Most data partners use a variety of data points when determining a target’s domain including:

IP Address (which will be the same for a remote working dialing into their company’s VPN)

Publisher Registration Databases

Offline Partners

Some vendors are seeing a slight decline in being able to hyper-target specific targeted accounts, mostly SMB’s. However, due to the increase in online users, vendors are seeing in increase in digital activity of up to 50%. You can also be more efficient with your dollars by focusing on industries that are seeing growth during this time (healthcare, biotech, etc.), and avoiding slower industries (travel, hospitality, food/restaurants).

WHAT WE ARE SEEING FOR OUR CLIENTS

Here are some trends we’ve seen for our B2B client during the last 2 weeks of March:

Due to increased activity in social, our campaigns on Facebook saw almost a 20% drop in CPM, with a lift in click-thru rate and engagement

After an initial bump in CPM, LinkedIn rates started to level off with click-thru and engagements performing almost 20% better

Our targeted account campaigns have also seen a lift of about 20% inactivity

Some clients have seen a large bump in web traffic, including about 26% increase in new sessions

My fellow Analysts, perhaps this sounds familiar: You're working on a campaign and have hit a point where the “story” is difficult to find. You're a few weeks in (perhaps months?) and you are reviewing trends with an overwhelming amount of data to share. With the following tips, you will be able to identify your story with the added benefit of your audience feeling confident in your analysis and campaign management.

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate

Alignment with your internal and external media team on the campaign objective, strategy, and analysis priorities is key. Is the advertiser most interested in creative performance? What about the CPA hitting a specific benchmark? Alignment can save time and guide you on your initial analysis path so you don’t get sidetracked.

When it comes to information the brand team can share with you, more is definitely more. Is there a content calendar or promo calendar that includes important customer emails with an incentive to purchase? This information can give you insights into why certain metrics may have shifted on a specific day.

As a best practice, don’t go more than a few weeks without sharing a performance nugget externally. This allows you to test the brand’s appetite for data-related conversations, have a gauge of their happiness level with the campaign, and understand where their priorities are based on the types of questions they ask.

Read Between The Lines

Was the campaign’s KPI initially CPA but now the conversations are focusing on website traffic? The next time reporting is shared, be sure to highlight site traffic as well as why it's up or down, year over year or month over month. If the conversation continues to be focused on traffic, this is when a chat with the advertiser about KPIs and how a traffic goal can cause CPA to become less efficient needs to take place. It will help manage expectations as well as ensure the campaign strategy is aligned with higher priority goals. Perhaps the campaign originally had a singular objective, but the brand team is now being tasked with something else. Maybe their internal goals are correlated with a different metric your campaign doesn’t highlight or wasn’t initially responsible for. Encouraging the person leading the campaign’s strategy to have an open discussion with the advertiser will promote full alignment on KPIs.

THINK INCREMENTALITY

Don’t forget to consider larger business goals. Is the advertiser hitting their overall daily, monthly, quarterly revenue goals? What other online and offline channels are running outside of this specific advertising campaign? Request access to this data to identify the impact of other channels over time since campaign launch. For example, did natural search volume and email signups increase? If so, it’s possible the campaign incrementally lifted these channels. Similarly, if you have access to channel data during a break between campaigns while media is not running (and thus not driving to the advertiser’s site), and there’s a subsequent decline in natural and direct traffic, you have a great opportunity to request relaunching the campaign.

WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES...OR A FEW CLICKS

Remember to understand the user experience. Do different creatives drive to a different part of the advertiser’s website? If so, do certain creative landing pages place the user one click closer to the order or lead? If so, explain why that CPA may be more efficient than the other creative that places users one step farther away from placing an order. Having an understanding of user experience on desktop and mobile can provide you with key insights, including why CPA may be inefficient in general and put the team in a nice position to recommend a site change that could significantly help performance from every traffic source.

GET CREATIVE WITH CREATIVE

Ads themselves are what tie the entire campaign together and drive the more compelling pieces of your story. Does the creative have a call-to-action that aligns with the goal of the campaign? Is sequential messaging involved to help drive users back to the site and increase their likelihood of purchasing? Do you have a specific retail item within your creative that may be driving more sales? Is there an upcoming event or sale that can be supported through creative that amplifies performance further? Zooming out, does your creative resonate more with specific audiences? Bringing all of these performance notes together can drive a very informative story and list of recommendations.

TEST

Consistent testing is key to creating a fresh story. Your agency or in-house team should be aligned on the priority of the test, cadence, and goals of the campaign including budget and length. To this end, create a shared calendar document that maps out when each test will occur, a hypothesis of performance, projections, and an estimated date when the team will receive results. Sharing test results will liven up any performance story and give you additional testing light bulb moments for future campaigns.

VISUALIZE

Heads-up! Visualizations are key for your story and simplicity ensures a clear, concise message. Think of your favorite book when you were younger, the supporting visual completes the narrative, right? The same goes for your campaign story. Was there a spike in orders on a particular day? A visualization and supportive bullet can speak for itself and resonate more than the most colorful paragraph. Has the advertiser’s site traffic declined significantly year over year? A bar chart reflecting volume and percentage change year over year by traffic source will help the team understand where and why the traffic has fluctuated.

KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Is your team technical or data-savvy? Get into the details and speak freely with acronyms and metrics. However, if your group is unfamiliar with industry terms, consider simplifying language and be prepared to define your metrics within your story so the messaging is clear.

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT AGAIN

I can assure you advertisers will find a 3-to-4-sentence actionable summary far more impactful than pages of miscellaneous analytical notes. Create a v1, v2, and sometimes v3 of your reporting story to ensure that the final version shared out is succinct and clear. V1 and v2 will be helpful to document performance for your internal team; however, your advertiser team doesn't need to see the in-the-weeds details unless they’ve expressed an interest in them.

WEAVE THE STORY

Once the final version of reporting is created and you've covered all of the above, ask yourself: What really happened here over the last few weeks/months? If the advertiser was to ask you, “What do I really need to know?,” could you summarize performance with a few sentences and a visualization? If yes, congrats! You have your story. The rest of the report is comprised of any supporting points.

Remember, you, yes you, analytics guru, are the expert. Let all your campaign expertise let you guide the ship with confidence.

From there, you’ll all live happily ever after.

The end.

Author: Rachael LaManna
There are three browsers that rule our digital world: Safari (Apple), Chrome (Google) and Firefox (Mozilla). Half of the population uses Chrome, with Safari coming in next at around 15%, and Firefox bringing up the rear at ~5% (according to some reports Firefox is used with the same frequency as Internet Explorer). On mobile, Chrome and Safari are by far the most popular, with Chrome coming out on top at more than 50%.

What’s the takeaway from these usage stats?

From an advertiser’s perspective, Chrome will have an enormous impact if they decide to block third-party cookies. Chrome is owned by Google who makes the majority of its money through advertising. Chrome will likely not go cookie-less unless they have a contingency plan to continue raking in the advertising dollars. Not to say they haven’t continuously ignored users’ concerns about privacy and intrusive ads.

Early last year, by default, Google began blocking ads that violate the Coalition for Better Ads standards. So those annoying full-page and countdown ads, as well as ads with autoplay sound and video, disappeared in the Chrome world. Not only did this improve user experience, it also boosted load times. Further, during their 2019 I/O conference, Google announced new privacy policies will be put in place, likely in Q4 ’19. When they are, it will probably involve putting a stop to fingerprinting and giving consumers the option to block and/or delete cookies.

For now, Chrome is an all-out cookie environment, but when and if it does decide to go cookie-less, there will most likely be a plan of action (unless they’re okay with losing a large amount of revenue). They even seem to be going in the opposite direction of Manifest V3 that prevents non-paid Chrome users from enabling adblocking. Only time will tell exactly the direction Chrome will go.

Safari, the second-largest browser used, already blocks cookies. At first, they only blocked third-party cookies, but because people were utilizing Link Decoration, a workaround that stores third-party cookies as first-party, first-party cookies are now capped to seven days and will soon be capped to one day. That means, no retargeting after seven days and this is only if Link Decoration is involved and someone clicked on the ad. This will soon switch to 24 hours.

Lastly (and somewhat least), Firefox will now, by default, block third-party cookies similar to Safari’s original ITP: Enhanced Tracking Protection. First-party cookies will still be allowed which means Link Decoration will most likely still be used.

Link Decoration Deep-Dive

As previously stated, Link Decoration is a workaround that allows third-party tracking by masking third-party cookies as first-party. This Digiday article explains it perfectly.

A side note on Link Decoration that all browsers should take seriously: It runs without consumers’ knowledge, so consumers can’t wipe collected information. Therefore it raises serious privacy concerns according to an AdExchanger report. And that data could contain PII.

How Worried Should Advertisers Be?

There are quite a few reasons we shouldn’t freak out just yet.

Advertising now happens in a multi-channel environment. Desktop display placements are just one component. Mobile, audio, and CTV are among the fastest-growing channels that also rely heavily on device IDs and cross-device targeting.

From a tech perspective, ads are already being effectively delivered in both cookie and cookie-less environments.

If Google and other companies shift to a device-ID approach for web browsers, similar to Apple’s device ID, which powers the mobile in-app environment, everyone stands to benefit. That includes advertisers and consumers.

If Google does decide to go cookie-less, Google ID (Gmail) can always be utilized. (According to a poll by Morning Consult, 44% of Americans use Gmail.)

Chrome will not go cookie-less without a backup solution. There is too much loss to be had in advertising dollars.

Utilizing ITP or similar systems could be a way to make the Internet safer for everyone while complying and getting ahead of privacy laws that have already been passed in Europe (GDPR) and may make their way to the U.S like the CCPA.

In terms of targeting, do cookies really matter? According to Wall Street Journal article, research suggests publishers only get about 4% more revenue for an ad impression that is cookie-enabled than for one that isn’t.

How do we survive in a post-cookie world?

In terms of tracking, we’re kind of already doing it. In fact, advertisers are doing okay in cookie-less environments, utilizing device IDs and cross-device measurement.

As for targeting, keep in mind that mobile location data is especially key! Everyone always has their phone with them, and you can tell a lot by where people go: We know when a stay-at-home parent goes to school 10x/week to drop off/pick up their kids and runs to stores during the day a few times a week. Then there is employing contextual targeting on cookie-less browsers which tends to work fairly well for campaigns.

For action items, if we don’t have access to device ID and cross-device measurement, for now, we can also block or reduce the budget on browsers that show poor performance due to cookie-less environments.

Taking all this into consideration, the tech world is moving at breakneck speed. Next year, we will have far better insights on what to do in a cookie-less environment, as Chrome will most likely have taken a much stronger stance on tracking by then. Media Matters Worldwide will continue sharing ideas and thoughts with you.
